Calligraphic Art in Sultanate Architecture-Shah Muhammad Shafiquallah

Calligraphy constitutes a major element of ornamentation in Muslim architecture. From the inception of Muslim building art down to the present time, calligraphy never lost its ground as surface ornaments. Monuments of the Delhi Sultanate almost invariably contain calligraphic decoration alongside other ornamental themes like geometric and vegetal ones in their bewildering manifestations.
The book is the revised version of the author's doctoral dissertation titled "Calligraphy in the Sultanate Architecture of India: A Study of Ornamentation and Stylistic Development". The study has been designed into six chapters.
Chapter 1 deals with the honourable place that calligraphy held in the domain of medieval Islamic art. Chapter II presents a summary discussion on the calligraphic ornamentation in the early Muslim architecture and traces its development upto the closing years of the 12th century. Chapter III observes the earliest occurrence of mural calligraphy in the Indo-Muslim architecture. Chapter IV makes an analytical study of the calligraphic ornamentation of the Sultanate architecture. All the important monuments of the period have been surveyed. Notice has been taken of the space-wise application of the calligraphic ornaments, the style of calligraphy and the nature of the texts (whether religious or secular), together with the materials in which the art occurs. The chapter has been divided into six sections representing the dynastic rules that cover the period of the Delhi Sultanate so as to follow the condition of the art under successive ruling phases. Chapter V investigates the technique of executing the calligraphic art on different media such as stone, stucco, brick, terracotta, tile and wood- commonly used by the craftsmen of the Sultanate period. Chapter VI consists of a summary of the discussions made in the previous chapters and draws certain conclusions of general nature in the light of the findings of the study.
