The short pieces put together in this volume are not literal translation of the texts on which they are based. The writings published in the present series were not designed to be translations of the Buddhist texts. Our object has been to present in simple language the kernel of Buddhist thought in such a manner that the common man may be able to grasp it without difficulty. Therefore, the success of our endeavor, in our opinion, is to be judged by the reaction of the common man and not that of the spiritual mentor or the literary critic. |
