FREEDOM AND DESTINY (OIP),This book looks at popular culture as an important resource for sociological insights into contemporary social issues and processes. Drawing on three popular media — calendar art, commercial ‘Bollywood’ cinema, and magazine romance fiction — it examines the representation of the family, childhood, courtship and conjugality; arranged and love marriage; feminity and masculinity; and sexuality within and outside marriage, as well as the wider dilemmas and dynamics of Indian modernity and nation-building from a gender-sensitive perspective.
